Speakers on We Are Not Your Soldiers Tour
Anthony Wagner
Anthony served 6 years in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Iraq. He is 27 years old. Most recently, he has led school workships and classroom presentations on the We Are Not Your Soldiers Tour, speaking to students about his experience in the military and the on-the-ground reality of being in war. Anthony lives in Chicago, is a graduate of the Academy of the Academy of Health Science ( San Antonio, TX) and is currently a full time student at Columbia College.
Liz Lazdins
Liz is currently part of the Chicago World Can’t Wait steering committee and has been organizing with them since 2005. She has spoken on the We Are Not Your Soldiers tour at various high schools and after school programs in the Chicago area. She currently resides on the south side of Chicago where she grew up. She has a BA in Social Work from the University Of Washington and is an artist and a poem. Liz is also a member of the University of Hip Hop and values bringing creativity, originality and youth into the campaign to stop the crimes of our government. She says, “ If you want to protect the innocent and fight for freedom, don’t join the military. Stay home and fight that battle here.”
Mathis Chiroux
Matthis joined the U.S. Army at age 18. For five years, he worked in Public Affairs until being discharged as a sergeant in ‘07 following tours in Japan and Germany, with shorter deployments to the Philippines and Afghanistan. He publicly refused activation and deployment to Iraq from the IRR in ‘08 and won a victory for resisters when the military discharged him under honorable conditions as a result. Mathis has been going to high school classrooms all over New York City on the We Are Not Your Soldier to tell students the truth about what happens when you join the U.S. Military. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for Iraq Veterans Against The War.
Elaine Brower
Elaine is on the National Steering Committee for World Can’t Wait. She is also an organizer for Military Families Speak Out. Her son recently finished 2 tours in Iraq and 1 tour in Afghanistan. From the very beginning she has been a leading voice in the anti-war movement to oppose both the Iraq and Afghanistan War. She has been at the forefront of the movement to prosecute key figures in the Bush administration for war crimes and crimes against humanity. She has spoke in classrooms in New York City, telling her story about what it means to be a mother of a U.S. Soldier and why people should not join this military.
Carl Dix
Carl was one of the ‘Fort Lewis 6′, Black GI’s who refused to go to Vietnam in 1970, and he did time at Fort Leavenworth Military Penitentiary for this “crime.” A lifelong revolutionary, Carl is a representative of the Revolutionary Communist Party. He has spoken in high school classrooms and university campuses across the country. Most recently, he and Cornel West shared a public dialogue at CCNY titled “The Ascension of Barack Obama and the Continued Need For Resistance and Liberation.” He has also been featured on Democracy Now!
